Application Policy (for Students)

The purpose of this application policy is to streamline the application process, and to ensure that all students be provided with consistent information and receive equitable treatment.


  1. Applying for Two Consecutive Terms

Students who wish to apply for two consecutive terms (Fall & Spring, Spring & Summer, Summer & Fall) may submit the following documents before the deadline of the first term:

  • $30 application fee
  • One (1) application form
  • Two (2) separate study statements, each detailing your objectives for the respective program
  • Three (3) academic references

Upon acceptance to the first study abroad program, applicants must then submit the following documents prior to the deadline of the second term:

  • $30 application fee
  • Updated study statement
  • Reference form and letter of recommendation from current Resident Director**

** Students who are on programs without a designated UHM faculty Resident Director may request a reference form and letter of recommendation from the on-site Academic Director.

Deadlines:

  • Fall & Spring: April 1*
  • Spring & Summer: October 15*
  • Summer & Fall: February 17*

*The Study Abroad Center is closed on weekends, and Federal and State holidays.

Note: Immediately upon approval of application, students are required to pay a $500.00 non-refundable initial payment to ensure a place in the program. The initial payment will be applied toward the cost of the program.

NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE GRANTED


2. Program Extension

A. Same program location

Students applying to extend their Study Abroad program at the same location must submit the following before the regular application deadline:

  • Study statement explaining their objectives for extending their study abroad program
  • Reference form and letter of recommendation from current Resident Director**
  • Acceptance Packet A extension request (including health form)

** Students who are on programs without a designated UHM faculty Resident Director may request a reference form and letter of recommendation from the on-site Academic Director.

Deadlines:

  • Fall: April 1*
  • Spring: October 15*

*The Study Abroad Center is closed on weekends, and Federal and State holidays.

B. Different program location

Students applying to extend their Study Abroad program at a different location must submit the following before the regular application deadline:

  • Application Form
  • Study statement explaining their objectives for extending their studying abroad at a different location
  • Reference form and letter of recommendation from current Resident Director**
  • $30 application fee

** Students who are on programs without a designated UHM faculty Resident Director may request a reference form and letter of recommendation from the on-site Academic Director.

Deadlines:

  • Fall: April 1*
  • Spring: October 15*

*The Study Abroad Center is closed on weekends, and Federal and State holidays.

Extension may be granted, pending visa requirements.

NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE GRANTED


 3. Deferral of Program Acceptance

Students accepted to a Study Abroad program who chose not to participate will forfeit their acceptance. The Study Abroad Center will not defer an acceptance to another term.

For example, you were accepted to the Fall in Florence study abroad program, and decide that Spring is a better fit for your schedule. The Study Abroad Center will not defer your Fall program acceptance to the Spring semester, and you will have to submit a new application, complete with the $30 application fee, study statement, and three (3) required academic references, to be considered for the Spring semester.
