Sarita Rai, UHM Study Abroad Center Director and Professor, is in charge of twenty-seven study abroad programs. She has a PhD in political science and is a trained political economist as well as a language specialist in Nepalese. Her interests lie in the areas of globalization, global studies, shared governance, and faculty governance. She served in leadership positions in the University of Hawai‘i Faculty Senate.  She was elected to the Board of the University of Hawai`i Professional Assembly, which is the faculty union organization.  She is active in its Executive Committee and serves as its Treasurer. She has been a Fulbright scholar in India, and provides consultation in the areas of cross-cultural training and risk management.  She co-edited with Miriam Fuchs the volume Study Abroad: Traditions and New Directions (MLA, 2018). Her recent article “Making a Case for an Integrated Faculty-Designed and Faculty-Operated Study Abroad Center,” (Journal of Comparative and International Higher Education, 2020)  discusses how shared governance matters in terms of developing, implementing study abroad programs within a University.

Louis Bousquet is associate professor of French at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Chair and Graduate advisor of the division of French and Italian in the LLEA department, he co-leads the French-speaking Oceania and Asia Initiative (FSOAI) as well as the Oceania Ensemble series at UHM. His research and teaching mainly focus on the art of love in literature. From its lyrical inception in 11th-century Provence, Limousin and Aquitaine to the contemporary disenchanted opus of Michel Houellebecq. In class, his aim is to rouse the yearning minds to the singular wonders of literature.

Description: Students attend classes at the International College of Seville (ICS), with additional options to attend EUSA University of Seville (in English and Spanish), and the University of Seville (in Spanish). In the summer program, students participate in an intensive Spanish language program worth six Spanish language credits. Seville is the capital of Andalusia, a region inundated with culture and romance. Andalusia is the backdrop of Bizet’s Carmen, the intense passion and faith of Semana Santa (Holy Week), the bacchanalia and revelry of Feria, the gyrating, hand-clapping, heel-stomping ballet and the songs of love and tragedy of the flamenco.

Ms. Lisa Dolan has been directing Student Affairs at the ICS for over 30 years now. She is responsible for the overseeing of ICS extracurricular activities, Service Learning and Internships. and federated soccer. After studying abroad in Spain, Italy and Japan she completed her Bachelor’s degree at Slippery Rock University in 1988 in Spanish and American literature and moved to Seville upon which she completed the graduate seminars in the Spanish Renaissance literature doctoral program.

Ms. Sandra Soto is Academic Director at the ICS.  Prior to commencing this position in 2018 she had broad academic experience in the management of study abroad programs. Special mention must be made to her association with Sweet Briar College where she served as Program Director at the University of Seville for 8 years.  Ms. Soto is currently completing her PhD in American literature at the University of Seville.

Ms. Gina de los Santos is the ICS Director of Housing.  She started as a Community College student at the ICS in 1990, and upon graduating Summa Cum Laude at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, she returned to Seville in 1992, taking on position of ICS Director of Housing and working with students ever since. Ms. Gina de los Santos is in charge of housing and advising students in addition to coordinating cultural activities, trips and visits.

Description: Université Catholique de Lille (UCL), or the Catholic University of Lille, was founded in 1875 with the five Colleges of Law, Arts, Science, Medicine, and Theology. Engineering and Paramedical Schools were added later.  Students  can choose courses in French language, business, engineering, science, sustainability, or political science.  Lille is a young city with a vibrant student population and offers sporting activities as well as fine museums, concerts, and theaters. It is one of France’s most dynamic towns and is only 50 minutes from Paris, one hour from Brussels, and two hours from London.

Description: Kōnan University (甲南大学 Kōnan Daigaku) is a private institution of approximately 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students, located in the eastern-most part of Kōbe city. Program: “My Two Italies”, Italy

Description: A brand new program from Istituto Lorenzo de’ Medici (LdM), where students take classes in two cities: Florence and Tuscania. In Florence, students will explore The Ancient Roots of Florence while also studying The Pursuit of Happiness. The Tuscania portion of the program will focus on Sustainable Food and Wine Business and Marketing. The program is a celebration of all that is Italian, from history, to excellence in the field of eno-gastronomy, approached from a business and marketing perspective. These courses will be complemented by two blocks of Italian Language instruction – an Italian pre-session in Florence, followed by an intensive session in Tuscania.

Description: The Université Catholique de Lille, Institut d’Économie Scientifique et de Gestion (IÉSEG) School of Management, Paris campus, is one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the country. IÉSEG is accredited by AACSB and ACBSP. In the semester program, UHM students may take French or other language courses, along with courses (taught in English) in Accounting, Art, Business Law, and more. Students who wish to participate in an intensive French-language track can opt to study at the Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne. The IÉSEG School of Management’s main campus is located in the modern business district La Défense, at the start of the western outskirts of Paris. Description: The Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (UNC) is a large, prestigious university within the federal education system of Argentina. Thus, students get specialized and individualized attention from faculty at UNC. Students earn six UHM Spanish language credits from beginning through advanced levels. Students gain listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in standard Spanish. In addition, lectures on civilization and culture will be given. A charming city of 600,000 people, Mendoza is located in the West Central part of Argentina, in the foothills of the Andes mountains.

My name is Amparo Argerich. I graduated as a Teacher of English as a foreign language at Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. After a few years working with children and teenagers I started working full time at the UNCuyo first in the field of Translation, and then teaching English in the Teacher Training College at the English Department. In 2006 I earned a teacher exchange Fulbright Foundation scholarship and I moved to Dekalb, Illinois, with my family to teach Spanish at Northern Illinois University. At CELE I design, coordinate and direct immersion programs for foreign universities, embassies and companies. When I have time, I also teach Spanish. In my classes I usually work with local and national newspaper articles with the idea that my students gain a basic insight into the complex socio-economic, political and cultural situation of Argentina. I have a passion for the outdoors and never miss the trips to the mountains or Patagonia with our students.

My name is Samiah Hassan. I obtained a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics at Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. I teach English as a Foreign Language at Teacher Training College at FFyL from 1992. My main interests are in Educational Linguistics, Systemic Functional Linguistics in English and Spanish and Genre Pedagogy. In 1996, I started teaching Spanish at CELE, mostly focusing on conversational skills and regional culture, to students from universities in the US and since 2002, I have designed and coordinated academic and cultural immersion programmes at CELE. I have always enjoyed learning from other peoples and interacting with students from various cultural and educational contexts.

My name is Laura Andreuccetti. I am a teacher of English as a foreign language graduated from Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. Although I am not currently teaching, I am still in contact with foreign students trying to help them have a good experience at our school. I have been an assistant at CELE since 2010, and last year I also started working in the International Relations Office at Facultad de Filosofía y Letras.

I have always enjoyed interacting with people in different contexts and helping those who need to solve problems. People I work with often appreciate my support and collaboration.

My name is Franco Franchetti. I am an English Teacher and I studied in Facultad de Filosofía y Letras of Universidad de Cuyo. After getting my degree, I went to Spain for two years, where I had my first contact with foreigners that wanted to learn Spanish. In 2008, I returned to Argentina and started working at CELE. I studied a major in Tourism and nowadays I am also studying Films, my greatest passion. I also teach English to teenagers and adults in public and private schools. I am constantly smiling, I am a good listener and I am always willing to help. My students have a lot of fun with me because I make jokes all the time!

He promotes activities that lead to the internationalization of the programs, assesses teaching methodologies, learning outcomes, program evaluations and quality assurance. In Florence, students will explore The Ancient Roots of Florence while also studying The Pursuit of Happiness. My name is Amparo Argerich. I graduated as a Teacher of English as a foreign language at Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. After a few years working with children and teenagers I started working full time at the UNCuyo first in the field of Translation, and then teaching English in the Teacher Training College at the English Department. In 2006 I earned a teacher exchange Fulbright Foundation scholarship and I moved to Dekalb, Illinois, with my family to teach Spanish at Northern Illinois University. At CELE I design, coordinate and direct immersion programs for foreign universities, embassies and companies. When I have time, I also teach Spanish. In my classes I usually work with local and national newspaper articles with the idea that my students gain a basic insight into the complex socio-economic, political and cultural situation of Argentina. I have a passion for the outdoors and never miss the trips to the mountains or Patagonia with our students.

My name is Samiah Hassan. I obtained a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics at Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. I teach English as a Foreign Language at Teacher Training College at FFyL from 1992. My main interests are in Educational Linguistics, Systemic Functional Linguistics in English and Spanish and Genre Pedagogy. In 1996, I started teaching Spanish at CELE, mostly focusing on conversational skills and regional culture, to students from universities in the US and since 2002, I have designed and coordinated academic and cultural immersion programmes at CELE. I have always enjoyed learning from other peoples and interacting with students from various cultural and educational contexts.

My name is Laura Andreuccetti. I am a teacher of English as a foreign language graduated from Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. Although I am not currently teaching, I am still in contact with foreign students trying to help them have a good experience at our school. I have been an assistant at CELE since 2010, and last year I also started working in the International Relations Office at Facultad de Filosofía y Letras.

I have always enjoyed interacting with people in different contexts and helping those who need to solve problems. People I work with often appreciate my support and collaboration.

My name is Franco Franchetti. I am an English Teacher and I studied in Facultad de Filosofía y Letras of Universidad de Cuyo. After getting my degree, I went to Spain for two years, where I had my first contact with foreigners that wanted to learn Spanish. In 2008, I returned to Argentina and started working at CELE. I studied a major in Tourism and nowadays I am also studying Films, my greatest passion. I also teach English to teenagers and adults in public and private schools.
