Upon arrival in Annecy, students take a placement
examination and accordingly are assigned to language
classes at their appropriate levels. Conducted at IFALPES, the classes include four hours of language instruction a day, studying grammar, culture, and civilization. There are also two hours each of conversation and phonetics per week. In addition, the resident director may assign six hours of experiential learning.
Students are also required to attend eight (two per week) afternoon "option" sessions: lectures, workshops or cultural excursions/activities. Topics range from local folklore and cuisine to visits to regional sites of interest. Throughout the entire program students are required to maintain written journals.
